Proof Test or Diagnostic Test — Most Engineers Can't Tell the Difference

Most engineers know that testing is part of functional safety — but the same physical test can be a proof test in one context and a diagnostic test in another, and that distinction directly affects your PFD calculation and SIL claim. The difference comes down to four specific conditions: whether the test runs automatically, how frequently it runs, whether it triggers a defined automated response, and whether it targets failures relevant to the safety function. Get the classification wrong and your numbers are wrong — even if the test itself is sound.
