Nine BHDT High-Pressure Valves and Their Final Element Assemblies Certified Under IEC 61508 and IEC 61511

Risknowlogy

Risknowlogy has independently certified nine high-pressure valves manufactured by BHDT in accordance with IEC 61508, and the final element assemblies BHDT integrates around them in accordance with IEC 61511 — confirming SIL capability for low demand safety instrumented functions in high-pressure chemical process applications.

What Was Certified

The valves are BHDT high-pressure valves 1228276, 1228301, 1228287, 1221032, 1221018, 1228622, 1228310, 1228623 and 1221034. Each is fitted in a final element assembly with a solenoid valve and an actuator. The assembly’s safety function is to close the valve on demand.

The certification confirms that the safety claims are documented, justified and independently verified: for each valve against IEC 61508, and for each assembly configuration against IEC 61511.

Scope of certification: management of functional safety, safety requirements specification, hardware requirements, reliability requirements, basic safety and user documentation.

Valve certificates 2628.664.6-0 to 2628.664.14-0, dated 1 October 2026, valid to 1 October 2031. Assembly certificate 2628.664.16-0, dated 2 October 2026, valid to 2 October 2031. All ten certificates refer to report 2628.664.15.

Verified Safety Performance

The following were reviewed and verified:

  • Valves: Type A, low demand mode, HFT 0, routes 1H and 1S, systematic capability SC2
  • Valves: fit for use up to SIL 1 at HFT=0 and SIL 2 at HFT=1
  • Assemblies: 1oo1 architecture, 22 subsystem entries across two trains, including fast- and slow-closing variants
  • Assemblies at HFT=0: SIL 2 for 4 entries and SIL 1 for 18; at HFT=1, SIL 2 for all 22
  • PFDavg calculated for proof test intervals from 1 to 20 years

Operators get a SIL limit and PFDavg figures for the configuration installed, not only for the valve inside it.

What This Means for Operators and Stakeholders

An operator can base each safety function on the assembly installed, using failure data from an FMEDA and field experience that Risknowlogy reviewed. Contractors running SIL verification start from a certified subsystem value instead of combining valve, actuator and solenoid data themselves. Auditors and insurers get independent evidence that the valves and the assemblies were each assessed against the standard that applies to them. Design, installation, validation and maintenance of the safety instrumented function remain the end user’s responsibility.

A certified valve is a component claim; what a safety function can claim depends on the assessed final element assembly around it.

About BHDT

BHDT, of Kapfenberg, Austria, supplies high-pressure equipment and components to the chemical and petrochemical industry. Certifying both its valves and the assemblies built around them puts each claim on documented, audit-ready evidence.
