Mütec MTP200-SIL O2 Oxygen Analysers Receive SIL 2 Certification

21 May 2026 · Elena Fisher

Risknowlogy has independently certified the Mütec MTP200-SIL O2 oxygen analyser family supplied by Mütec Instruments GmbH in accordance with IEC 61508:2010 — confirming verified SIL 2 compliance for use in low-demand safety instrumented functions in the process industry.

What Was Certified

The certification covers three variants of the Mütec MTP200-SIL O2 platform — safety-related oxygen analysers used in process-industry safety instrumented functions: MTP200i-SIL-OS (Type 01-758 and 06-205, firmware 4.20), MTP200-SIL O2 LT (Type 04-615, firmware 5.02), and MTP200-SIL O2 ZR (Type 05-015, firmware 5.04). All three variants share a common hardware and software platform and implement the same functional safety concept.

The certification confirms that the safety claims for these products are technically justified, documented, and verified against IEC 61508:2010, and that the certified variants are fit for use up to SIL 2 and STL 2 in low-demand mode.

Scope of certification: Management of functional safety, safety requirements specification, hardware, hardware reliability, software, fault injection testing, basic safety, and user documentation.

Verified Safety Performance

As part of the certification process, the safety functions implemented by the MTP200-SIL O2 family were reviewed and verified, including:

  • Mode of operation: low demand
  • Type B device, Hardware Fault Tolerance (HFT) 0
  • Safe Failure Fraction (SFF): 97.6%
  • Dangerous undetected failure rate: DU = 19 FIT
  • Systematic capability: SC 2
  • SIL capability: fit for use up to SIL 2 / STL 2

The combination of a 97.6% safe failure fraction and a low dangerous undetected failure rate is what carries this single-channel Type B device to SIL 2 — the diagnostics do the work, not the architecture. Operators receive verified reliability data they can use directly in SIL verification calculations.

What This Means for Operators and Stakeholders

Operators specifying the MTP200-SIL O2 family in safety instrumented functions get independently verified failure data and a clear SIL 2 capability statement they can rely on. Engineering contractors and system integrators benefit from reduced uncertainty during SIL verification, with documented HFT, SFF, and FIT values ready for use in PFDavg calculations. For insurers, auditors, and regulators, the certificate provides independent evidence that the functional safety requirements of IEC 61508:2010 have been systematically addressed.

SIL certification is not a label on a cover — it is a verified set of numbers, and the SFF and DU rate are what carry a single-channel device to SIL 2.

About Mütec Instruments GmbH

Mütec Instruments GmbH, based in Seevetal-Ramelsloh, Germany, is a returning Risknowlogy certification customer that comes back when its products need to stay SIL compliant. The MTP200-SIL O2 family was first certified by Risknowlogy on 20 June 2005; the current certificate (18.658.3-5) was issued on 21 May 2026 and is valid until 21 May 2031. The certificate holder is Mütec Instruments GmbH and the certifier is Dr Michel Houtermans of Risknowlogy GmbH, Zug, Switzerland. Certificate number: 18.658.3-5.
