The Esferomatic Trunnion Ball Valve Series has been independently certified by Risknowlogy in accordance with IEC 61508, confirming its suitability for use as a safety-related final element in safety instrumented systems.

The certification was performed as a product certification, covering the applicable functional safety requirements for mechanical valve assemblies used in low-demand safety functions. The assessment was carried out using Risknowlogy’s structured IEC 61508 methodology for final elements, addressing hardware design, failure behaviour, and reliability characteristics relevant to safety integrity.

The certified valve series is classified as Type A hardware.The certification scope includes the evaluation of two defined safety functions, representing typical shutdown and isolation duties performed by trunnion-mounted ball valves in process-industry applications.

Based on the assessed failure rates and architectural constraints defined by IEC 61508, the Esferomatic Trunnion Ball Valve Series is suitable for use in SIL 1 applications in HFT = 0 configurations, and can be applied in SIL 2 safety functions when implemented with HFT = 1, subject to correct system design and integration.

This certification provides end users, EPCs, system integrators, and insurers with confidence that the Esferomatic valve series can be incorporated into safety instrumented functions as part of a compliant functional safety lifecycle.
