What Is a Knowledge Certificate in Functional Safety — and How Is It Earned?

A knowledge certificate in functional safety proves that you understand the standards. It is the foundation upon which real competence is built.

What a Knowledge Certificate Confirms

A knowledge certificate demonstrates that the holder has completed structured training and successfully passed an exam on a specific topic.

This includes areas such as IEC 61508, IEC 61511, HAZOP, SIL Verification, and other functional safety disciplines.

It confirms understanding—not practical capability.

Key distinction: A knowledge certificate proves what you know. It does not prove what you can do.

Risknowlogy Knowledge Certificate Levels

Risknowlogy offers two levels of knowledge certification:

  • Specialist Certificate — awarded for a score of 60% or higher
  • Specialist with Distinction — awarded for a score of 85% or higher

Assessment criteria: Passing requires demonstrating structured understanding of the subject matter through examination.

Validity and Access

Once achieved, the knowledge certificate provides:

  • Lifetime access to the training content
  • Recognition of achieved knowledge level
  • A foundation for further certification

The exam must be completed within the designated time window following training.

Knowledge vs Competence

It is important to distinguish between knowledge and competence:

  • Knowledge Certificate: Confirms understanding of standards and concepts
  • Competence Certificate (Professional, Expert, Master): Confirms ability to apply knowledge in real-world situations
Knowledge is the foundation. Competence is what you build on it.

Why It Matters

Functional safety is governed by complex standards and requirements. Without a solid understanding of these principles, it is impossible to design, implement, or verify compliant systems.

A knowledge certificate ensures that individuals start from a verified baseline of understanding—reducing risk and improving consistency across projects.
