What does the SIL Master module do?

Overview

The SIL Master module within Business Master (BM) is a comprehensive module designed to facilitate hardware integrity analysis for safety functions. This module is instrumental in ensuring compliance with industry standards such as IEC 61508 or IEC 61511 for safety-critical systems.

Safety function architecture

Key Features and Functionality

The SIL Master module offers the following key features and functionalities:

  • Safety Function Definition: Users can define safety functions, specifying critical parameters such as mode of operation, target Safety Integrity Level (SIL), and target Probability of Failure on Demand (PFD).
  • Subsystem Creation: Users have the flexibility to create subsystems, which consist of safety devices and their associated parameters. These subsystems are essential components of safety functions.
  • Drag-and-Drop Interface: The module provides an intuitive interface for creating the architecture of safety functions. Users can easily drag and drop safety equipment components from either their account library or the QID database maintained by Risknowlogy.
  • Failure Rate Data: Each safety device used in the architecture is accompanied by failure rates, Type (A or B), mode (low, high, continuous), and optional images.
  • Hardware Integrity Analysis: The module automates hardware integrity analysis, including architectural constraints analysis, PFD calculation, or both, according to relevant standards.
  • Subsystem Analysis: Subsystems, composed of safety devices, are analyzed for SIL compliance to ensure system integrity.
  • Data Management: Devices and subsystems are stored in a library on account level, maintaining data integrity. When used in a project, data is copied, allowing projects to replicate calculations and data even when account-level updates occur.
  • Versioning Control: If a device's data changes on the account level, projects using the device receive notifications and can choose to update project-level data or retain the existing data.

User Guidance

Creating Safety Functions

  • Assign the SIL Master module to a project.
  • Define safety functions within the project, providing essential information such as a descriptionn, mode of operation, target SIL, and target PFD.
  • Create the architecture of safety functions by dragging and dropping safety equipment components from your account library or the QID database.

Managing Devices and Subsystems

  • Authorized users can manage devices on account level, adding, editing, or deleting devices in the account library.
  • On project level, users can access account-level devices. When a device is selected for use in a project, it is copied to the project, ensuring data integrity.
  • Updates to account-level devices trigger notifications on the project level, offering the option to update project-level data or maintain existing data.

Conclusion

The SIL Master module in Business Master streamlines hardware integrity analysis for safety functions, simplifying compliance with industry standards. With its intuitive interface, data management features, and automatic analysis capabilities, users can confidently ensure the integrity and safety of their critical systems.
