What Is a Knowledge Certificate in Functional Safety?
Before we explain what it is and why you and employers need them, let us first clarify that a person can achieve three types of certificates. Besides knowledge certificates, you, as a person, can also receive role and field certificates. The latter two we will address in future posts.

A knowledge certificate you receive after following a training course and passing the associated exam. It is a single training of one or more days, not months or years, like a college or university degree. The exam that comes with training can consist of multiple-choice questions, open questions or even case studies. When you pass the exam, you have demonstrated that you gained knowledge from this course.

What is it not?

One thing needs to be very clear. A knowledge certificate is not proof of any practical experience you have in the knowledge you just achieved. Don’t forget that it is only training, not on-the-job experience. If you want to prove your practical experience, you need to go for a role or field certificate.

Knowledge certificates and titles

You can receive knowledge certificates that have a title associated with them. For example, knowledge certificates at Risknowlogy can lead to the title certified technician, certificate operator or certified specialist. We call them FS Tech, FS Operator and FS Specialist if it is in the field of functional safety.

But do not forget. It is not the same as an academic title like an MSc, PhD, or Doctorate. To earn these titles, you can attend several years at a university.

What do you personally need them?

Knowledge certificates don’t just demonstrate that you paid attention when you took the training. They add real value to your career. With knowledge certificates, you can show your current or potential future employer you are competent.

Why is a knowledge certificate necessary for managers and business owners?

Managers and business owners must train employees to stay competent and support their business needs. Businesses need to remain competitive and thus need to invest continuously in their people. One way to do this is by sending them to training. These training courses are costly; a knowledge certificate demonstrates that the training paid off for the employee and the employer. Later, employers can win projects from clients that need proof of competency. It can be a checkbox item and decide whether you can make a bid or not on a project.
