SIL and Functional Safety for Developers of Mechanical Devices
Brunssum, The Netherlands, 31 October 2006 – Risknowlogy, experts in risk, reliability, safety and security, today announced it has launched a new training course for developers of mechanical devices. This training course focuses on the functional safety aspects of mechanical and electro-mechanical devices used in industry for safety applications.
“We are proud to be the first company to offer a training course in the functional safety world specifically focused on SIL for mechanical devices.” said Dr. Michel Houtermans, Risknowlogy’s founder and president. “Allthough everybody tries to automate safety systems with electronics and software in a majority of the safety applications mechanical devices still play an important and crucial role.”
The IEC 61508 standard addresses functional safety of electrical, electronic, and programmable electronic safety related systems. Allthough it has no technical requirements for mechanical equipment its framework and principles can be applied to devices of any kind of technology. This course will explain how functional safety, as intended by IEC 61508, applies to mechanical devices like valves, actuators, relays, circuit breakres and so on. It will address the following topics:
- Introduction to functional safety
- Functional safety management
- Hazard and risk analysis
- Hardware requirements
- Reliability analysis and data
“This course offers a complete overview of all aspects of functional safety and is therefore suitable for managers, engineers, sales and marketing people.” Dr. Houtermans said. “Only if you understand the full picture you can apply the functional safety princple in the correct but also in an effective way to mechanical devices and take full advantage of it in this competitative market.”
