Global Participates in Demonstration of Foundation™ fieldbus protocol for SIF applications.
Zug, Switzerland (2008-05-20) — Risknowlogy, the global experts in functional safety, and a pioneer in the development and use of Foundation for Safety Instrumented Functions continues its commitment to support safe communication with its participation in the development of the F-SIF specification and protocol. As part of this effort, Risknowlogy joined a demonstration project to show the benefits of Foundation for Safety Instrumented Functions at multiple sites end-user sites around the world. Demonstration of F-SIF technology will be conducted at Shell Global Solutions, Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Saudi Aramco, Dharan, Saudi Arabia; BP, Gelsenkirchen, Germany, and Chevron, Houston, Texas, USA. The field demonstration are intended to promote adoption of F-SIF technology in the process industries. The project also includes development of SIF best practices and guidelines, as well as training and interoperability test tools for automation equipment manufacturers and end-users.
Wolfgang Velten-Philipp, Risknowlogy’s functional safety expert and TÜV Süd certifier, supplied his expertise and knowledge during the development and certification of the F-SIF communication protocol. The protocol is today implemented by devices manufacturers like Emerson, HIMA, Honeywell, Triconex, smar, E+H, Westlock, Neles, and many more. The demonstration at Shell Global Solutions in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, showed the interoperability of these devices and demonstrated successfully the use of Foundation fieldbus to implement safety functions comprised of sensors, logic solvers and actuators including proof tests.
“Functional safety is the basis for safe communication,” comments Wolfgang Velten-Philipp, Functional Safety Expert, “and in combination with the F-SIF protocol Foundation Fieldbus has an excellent platform for safe and reliable communication in the process industry.”
Risknowlogy helps today device manufacturers with the implementation of F-SIF and functional safety, through developers training and workshops. During these trainings the functional safety aspects of a F-SIF device are explained in theory and practical workshops help the developers prepare there documentation for certification.
