Risknowlogy Argentina performs SIL lifecycle services

Risknowlogy Argentina performed a functional safety project and SIL lifecycle services for a large South American Gas Transportation company. The project included the following tasks defined over different life cycle phases:

  • Assessment of existing (old) documentation related to hazard and risk analysis, safety equipment and existing SIS
  • Verification of HAZOP documentation from 1999
  • Manage and lead new HAZOP+LOPA studies
  • Write safety requirements specification (SRS) (HW and SW)
  • SES (safety equipment specification), including data sheets with process and safety related data
  • Basic engineering diagrams, including SIL verification of loops (with current equipment and with the specified new equipment)

Some SIL Lifecycle services related job details

The SIL Lifecycle services project was carried out over a period of 12 months. During this time Risknowlogy Argentina performed many different SIL and safety related tasks. Many different documents were created including an SRS compliant with IEC 61511. Based on this SRS, diagrams were created to show that the designs where complaint with the SRS. Later these diagrams where used for detailed engineering drawings by the EPC.

Risknowlogy professionals verified the specified safety equipment, from a HW and Embedded Software point of view including architectural constraints, failure rates and PFDavg on loop level.

Benefits for the client

The client learned a lot from this project:

  • The client learned what it meant to implement a SIL project and be compliant with standards like IEC 61511 and IEC 61508
  • Unfortunately the client now confirms that plant safety is compromised because existing safety systems are not suitable to protect against the existing risks.
  • The client understands the gaps and has now an action plan to close the gaps. They have a solid safety project which allow them, among others, to retrofit safety systems with state of the art technology. There is a clear path forward to ensure that safety will be in place according to functional safety standards in the near future.
