Four Years Hazards and Risk Analysis

Zug, Switzerland – – 18 September 2008 – – Risknowlogy®, a leading provider of risk, reliability, safety and certification solutions, announced today that they made an agreement with NUON to actively participate as independent HAZOP leader in the hazard and risk analysis currently under taken at their Gasification power plant in Buggenum, The Netherlands.

Nuon Power Buggenum produces and delivers electricity. This electricity is generated in the Willem-Alexander Power Plant located in the centre of Limburg, in Buggenum (municipality of Haelen, near Roermond). This power plant uses gasification to transform fuels into energy. Coal and secondary fuels are used as an energy source to generate this power. Compared to conventionally heated power plants, gasification provides a number of benefits. One of these is that emissions into the air are much lower. By gasifying coal and secondary fuels instead of burning them, the emissions of acidic compounds (sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide), and of solid particles are greatly reduced because the coal gas is thoroughly purified.

NUON Power Buggenum operates their power plant under the SEVESO II directive. A continuous hazard and risk analyses effort is under taken at the power plant to demonstrate compliance with the directive. Part of this effort is a HAZOP analysis which is repeated every 5 years. NUON has hired Risknowlogy B.V., The Netherlands, to deliver independent HAZOP leaders for this analysis.

“This is a great opportunity for Risknowlogy”, says Frank Kozole, Managing Director Risknowlogy The Netherlands. “The gasification plant in Buggenum is a complex plant due to its experimental design and nature. The next four years Risknowlogy will periodically carry out the HAZOP leader role at NUON.”.
