Schinveld, The Netherlands – – 6 Januari 2009 – – Risknowlogy®, a leading provider of risk, reliability, safety and certification solutions, announced today that they are performing, for the Dutch Government (Rijkswaterstaat), functional safety audits on the tunnel technical installations of newly build tunnels in The Netherlands.

Tunnel Safety Audits

The Dutch Government is currently undertaking several major tunnel projects in the Netherlands (A2 near Utrecht, A73 near Swalmen and Roermond, and the future A2 near Maastricht). For all these projects the tunnels need to be build according to the Dutch tunnel safety law. Many of tunnel technical installations deal with safety applications like smoke and fire detection, traffic management, closure and release of the tunnels, alarm management, and so. These tunnel technical installations are state-of-the-art in the tunnel business, need to be very reliable and need to build according to functional safety principles.

“The Dutch Government has hired us as functional safety auditors.” said Frank Kozole, Managing Director Risknowlogy, The Netherlands. “We will focus our efforts on the development, design, and maintainability of the hardware and software of the tunnel technical installations.”

The basic document for functional safety of safety systems in industry is the IEC 61508 standard. The IEC 61508 standard is a general purpose standard that can be applied to any kind of safety system in any industry.
