Waste water pump with functional safety circuitry

ZUG, Switzerland – – 5 October 2010 – – Risknowlogy®, a leading provider of risk, reliability, safety services, engineering, consulting, training and certification announced today that it completed the functional safety assessment of the Grundfos AUTOadapt pump series. The AUTOadapt pump series reaches the SIL 2 requirements of IEC 61508.

The main area of application for this pump is waste water treatment. As dry hydraulics could cause sparks in explosive environments, caused by waste water vapours, the electronic circuit of the pump must prevent an explosion by stopping the pump. The required SIL 2 level for the AUTOadapt pump series was derived from EN 13463-6.

Risknowlogy has performed a full verification and assessment according to IEC 61508 and addressed the following IEC 61508 aspect for the AUTOadapt pump series:

  • Functional safety management;
  • Hardware requirements;
  • Hardware reliability requirements (failure rates, SFF, PFDavg, etc);
  • Software requirements;
  • Basic safety requirements (ATEX, EMC, etc);
  • User documentation.

The results of the analysis are documented in a technical report. The associated functional safety data sheet holds the most important functional safety properties like SIL level, STL, SFF, failure rates, MTTFs, MTTFd, and Diagnostic Coverage.

The AUTOadapt pump series is suitable to be used in SIL 2 and STL 5 applications.
