This November, Risknowlogy held an In-House Functional Safety for Safety Instrumented System Professionals training for employees of Borouge, at their office in Ruwais, UAE. The Functional Safety for Safety Instrumented System Professionals course is part of the SILComp® training and certification program. Topic was the concepts of Functional Safety and SIL according to IEC 61511. The Borouge functional safety professionals attended a four day training followed by an exam on day 5. The exam takes four hours and consists of 60 multiple choice questions and 25 open questions. When the professional scores 75% on the exam he or she receives a Safety Passport and a TUV Certificate

We are very proud to announce that the First Iranian TUV SIS IEC 61511 certification course has taken place in September in Tehran, Iran. The course was organized with our local partner pro-NEXO by Dr. Farshad Nourai and was a great success. There are many manufactures of mechanical devices (valves, actuators, etc) that claim that their devices can be used in SIL 3 applications. In this post I am going to explain that most mechanical devices actually will never achieve SIL 3. In order to come to this conclusion I first need to explain a few basic concepts which include architectural constraints, Type, HFT and SFF. Yes, sorry about that. Risknowlogy witnesses FAT Wellhead Control Panel (WHCP) for a SIL 3 certification project. The project is carried out according to IEC 61511. In the picture you see all WHCPs lined up, ready to be tested. A simulator was used to simulate signals from the field. The FAT is that last major step in the certification process. There are many tank farms around the world. You would think that tank farm operators would, from a business point of view, not be interested in overfilling a tank. How is is that good for business? Yet, today, many tank farms still have very poor tank level management systems and procedures in place. They are not in a position to manage overfilling properly and in a safe manner.

We are incredibly proud to start 2016 with this many advocates for the Functional Safety and SIL industry. The last period over a hundred candidates demonstrated their knowledge by passing the associated TUV exam.

Congratulations to our 44 new TUV Functional Safety Professionals in IEC 61508, IEC 61511, ISO 26262, SIL Verification and Calculation or FS and SIL for Instrument Technicians. The delegates not only received an online Safety Passport, a listing on the TUV website but also peer recognition. A job well done.

A factory acceptance test (FAT) is not the problem. An FAT, if well done, is a good thing. The problem is the majority of FATs are not well done. The purpose of an FAT is to test hardware and software safety solutions before they are installed in the factory or plant. It is a requirement in a standard like IEC 61511.

Risknowlogy India organised the 15th TUV Functional Safety Professional course in Mumbai. Delegates came from BPCL, GE, Jacobs, Saral Controls, Reliance, and Invensys Schneider. For three days the delegates were trained in the concepts of Functional Safety and SIL according to IEC 61511. IEC 61511 is an international standard dealing with safety instrumented systems (SIS) and safety instrumented functions (SIF). The standard requires professionals and engineers to be competent and that is exactly what this course helps you to demonstrate.

Risknowlogy India organised the 1st SIL Verification and Calculation Workshop in Mumbai last week. The workshop was attended by delegates from Reliance, Invensys Schneider, Jacobs, ThyssenKrupp, and Safe-Tronics. In a two day hands-on workshop the delegates learned how to verify the SIL status of Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs) according to IEC 61511.

Even though safety is in first instance a management responsibility, you can make the difference. The future of safety is in your own hands. You can make a difference by taking responsibility.
